The Pesticide-Free Village
How one community in India pioneered ecological farming and inspired a global movement
A. In the early 1990s, the village of Ennamangalam in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, India, faced a crisis familiar to farming communities across the developing world. Decades of intensive agriculture based on high-yield seed varieties, synthetic fertilisers, and heavy pesticide application had initially produced significant productivity gains, but by the late 1980s the familiar pattern of diminishing returns, rising input costs, soil degradation, and persistent crop failures had begun to take hold. Pesticide resistance among the cotton bollworm — the primary pest of the region's main cash crop — had rendered several previously effective chemicals useless, forcing farmers to apply higher doses of more powerful alternatives and pushing household debt to unsustainable levels.
B. The transformation of Ennamangalam began when a small group of farmers, supported by the non-governmental organisation Centre for World Solidarity, began experimenting with an approach known as Non-Pesticide Management (NPM), which aimed to manage pests through ecological and biological methods rather than chemical ones. The core techniques included the use of neem-based botanical sprays — derived from the seeds of the neem tree, which contains compounds toxic to a range of insects but not to birds or mammals — the establishment of refugia strips of flowering plants along field margins to support populations of natural pest predators, and the systematic monitoring of pest populations to determine whether and when intervention was warranted, rather than spraying on a fixed schedule.
C. The adoption of NPM spread rapidly through Ennamangalam and neighbouring villages as early adopters demonstrated that cotton yields comparable to those achieved with synthetic pesticides were possible without the cost and health risks of chemical inputs. The financial benefits were substantial: the elimination of expensive synthetic pesticide purchases significantly reduced input costs, often halving total production expenses even when other inputs were maintained at conventional levels. Reduced pesticide exposure also produced measurable health benefits for farming families, who reported lower rates of the acute poisoning symptoms — headaches, nausea, skin irritation, and eye problems — that had been common during intensive pesticide application periods.
D. The movement spread beyond Ennamangalam to encompass thousands of villages across Andhra Pradesh in the late 1990s and 2000s, supported by the state government's Community Managed Sustainable Agriculture programme. By 2010, an estimated 800,000 farming families in Andhra Pradesh were practising NPM, representing one of the largest transitions to ecologically based agriculture ever documented. The scale of the transition attracted international attention: researchers and policymakers from across Asia, Africa, and Latin America visited the state to study its methods, and the Andhra Pradesh model became a reference point in global discussions about the viability of ecological alternatives to conventional chemical- intensive agriculture.
E. The NPM approach was not without its critics and its limitations. Crop yields in the first one to three years of transition were sometimes lower than under conventional management, as farmers learned the new techniques and as the ecological infrastructure supporting natural pest control — pest predator populations, beneficial soil microorganism communities — gradually built up. Some crops and pest combinations proved more amenable to ecological management than others: cotton, with its complex and well-studied pest ecology, was the most successfully managed, while some vegetable crops with rapid pest cycles proved more challenging to protect without synthetic chemical backup.
F. The long-term legacy of the Andhra Pradesh NPM movement is now visible in several indicators. Soil health in fields under long-term NPM management shows measurable improvements in organic matter content, earthworm populations, and microbial diversity compared to conventionally managed fields. Farmer household incomes are higher on average in villages where NPM has been practised longest, reflecting both lower input costs and the premium prices that certified organic produce increasingly commands in urban markets. The health and ecological benefits have been accompanied by enhanced farmer agency: participants in NPM programmes report greater confidence in their own judgement about pest management, and the peer learning networks that the movement established have persisted and adapted to address new agricultural challenges.
