An Important Language Development
How children acquire language — and what the process reveals about the nature of human cognition
A. Language acquisition is one of the most remarkable achievements of early childhood. Within the first three years of life, most children progress from producing undifferentiated cries to using thousands of words in grammatically structured sentences, comprehending subtle distinctions of meaning and register, and engaging in extended conversational exchanges — all without formal instruction. This achievement is accomplished at a pace and with a consistency that no other learning domain approaches. Children acquire the phonological, lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic systems of their native language or languages in parallel, with minimal explicit correction, and reach adult-like proficiency in most aspects of grammar by around the age of four or five.
B. The theoretical account of language acquisition that dominated linguistics from the 1960s to the 1990s — associated with the work of Noam Chomsky — proposed that this achievement required a dedicated biological endowment: an innate Universal Grammar that specified the abstract structural properties shared by all human languages and constrained the space of possible grammars that children had to consider when acquiring their native language. The speed and consistency of language acquisition, and the complexity of what children acquired relative to the impoverished and error-laden input they received — what Chomsky called the poverty of the stimulus — was held to be inexplicable without such an endowment.
C. Empirical challenges to the nativist account have accumulated over the past three decades. Careful analysis of child-directed speech has found that it is considerably richer, more grammatically consistent, and more informative than the poverty-of-the- stimulus argument assumed. Parents and caregivers systematically use simpler sentences, higher frequencies of informative constructions, and more consistent grammatical structures when speaking to young children than when speaking to other adults — a register known as child-directed speech or motherese. Corpus studies of child language development have also found that children learn grammar more gradually and more item-by-item than a universal grammar account would predict, initially acquiring construction patterns specific to individual words rather than abstract grammatical rules.
D. Usage-based theories of language acquisition propose that children learn language through the same general cognitive mechanisms — including statistical learning, analogy, categorisation, and pattern recognition — that support other forms of learning, rather than through a dedicated linguistic module. On this account, children extract the statistical regularities in the language they hear, form increasingly abstract categories from concrete input, and construct grammar through gradual generalisation rather than by setting parameters in an innate grammar. The evidence for children's statistical learning abilities — demonstrated through habituation paradigms in infants as young as eight months who can detect violations of distributional regularities in speech streams — is one of the strongest supports for this theoretical alternative.
E. The role of social interaction in language development has received increasing recognition in recent decades. Language is acquired in communicative contexts, and the social cues that determine reference — including gaze direction, pointing, and shared attention — are crucial for bootstrapping word learning. Studies have found that the social richness of the language learning environment — specifically, the amount of adult speech directed to the child (as opposed to overheard speech), the degree to which adults follow and expand on the child's own focus of attention, and the diversity of conversational partners — is a stronger predictor of vocabulary development than the sheer amount of language input. Children with larger, more socially diverse conversational environments develop larger vocabularies faster.
F. The acquisition of literacy — reading and writing — represents a second major language development that occurs later in childhood and is, unlike oral language acquisition, dependent on explicit instruction and formal schooling. While oral language is acquired by all typically developing children in all cultures without instruction, written language is a technology that requires teaching, and its acquisition varies considerably depending on the quality and availability of instruction, the characteristics of the writing system used, and the broader language environment of the learner. The relationship between oral language skills and reading development is close and reciprocal: strong oral language foundations support the acquisition of reading, while reading in turn expands vocabulary, exposes children to grammatical structures not common in spoken language, and provides access to the accumulated knowledge encoded in written texts.
