The practical consequences of processing speed decline are often manageable, however, since experience and expertise can compensate for reduced speed in many familiar domains. Working memory — the system that holds and manipulates a limited amount of information in conscious awareness over short periods — also shows significant age- related decline. Older adults typically perform worse than younger ones on tasks that require them to hold multiple pieces of information in mind while simultaneously performing other operations, such as following a complex conversation while remembering an address. This limitation has implications for many practical activities, including learning new procedures, following multi-step instructions, and managing complex financial or medical decisions. By contrast, several forms of knowledge and skill tend to be preserved or enhanced in older adults. Crystallised intelligence — the store of knowledge, vocabulary, and expertise accumulated through experience — is typically maintained well into the seventh and eighth decades of life and, in highly educated individuals, may continue to grow. Emotional regulation — the ability to manage and modulate one's emotional responses — generally improves with age. Older adults tend to show better control of negative emotions, report higher levels of life satisfaction, and demonstrate greater equanimity in the face of adversity than younger adults, a pattern sometimes described as the positivity effect.
The rate of cognitive ageing is substantially influenced by lifestyle factors. Regular physical exercise has the most robust evidence base: aerobic exercise in particular has been shown to increase the volume of the hippocampus — the brain region critical for memory and spatial navigation — and to slow age-related cognitive decline across multiple domains. Cognitively stimulating activities — learning new skills, engaging with challenging reading or conversation, playing complex games — appear to build what neuroscientists call cognitive reserve: a buffer of neural resources that delays the point at which underlying brain changes become manifest as functional decline. Social engagement is an often-underestimated factor in cognitive ageing. Loneliness and social isolation are associated with accelerated cognitive decline and elevated risk of dementia. Older adults who maintain rich social lives — with frequent, meaningful interaction with family, friends, and community — show slower rates of memory decline than those who are socially isolated, even after controlling for other health factors.
