The Digital Diet
How the explosion of digital media is changing the way we think, learn, and relate to one another — and what to do about it
A. In 2007, the average American spent approximately 18 minutes per day on their mobile phone. By 2022, this figure had risen to over four hours. The smartphone, combined with social media platforms, streaming services, and news applications, has created an information environment of unprecedented density and speed — one in which attention is the scarce resource and in which technologies deliberately engineered to maximise engagement compete constantly for every available moment. The consequences of this transformation for human cognition, wellbeing, and social connection are the subject of intense and growing research interest.
B. The concept of a 'digital diet' — by analogy with nutritional diet — proposes that the quality and quantity of digital media consumed, like the quality and quantity of food consumed, has measurable effects on mental and physical health. Just as a diet high in ultra-processed food is associated with poor physical health outcomes, a media diet dominated by rapidly changing, emotionally stimulating, and algorithmically curated content may be associated with reduced attention spans, increased anxiety, and a diminished capacity for the sustained, effortful thinking required for complex tasks. The analogy is imperfect — media and food are fundamentally different kinds of inputs — but it has proved a productive framework for thinking about how individuals and societies might approach their relationship with digital technology.
C. Research on the cognitive effects of heavy digital media use is still developing, and the evidence is more nuanced than either the most alarmed popular accounts or the most dismissive technological optimists suggest. Laboratory studies have consistently found that the mere presence of a smartphone — even when switched off and face-down — reduces the cognitive resources available for the task at hand, because part of the brain's limited attentional capacity is engaged in resisting the impulse to check it. Studies of social media use and mental health have found associations between heavy use and anxiety and depression, particularly in adolescent girls, though the direction of causality — whether social media use causes poor mental health or whether people with poor mental health use social media more — remains contested.
D. One of the most frequently discussed concerns is the impact of digital technology on reading. The shift from deep, sustained engagement with long-form text to the skimming, scanning, and rapid switching characteristic of online reading may, over time, alter the neural circuits that support sustained concentration. The neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf has argued that the capacity for deep reading — the kind of slow, reflective engagement with a text that produces genuine understanding and generates new insight — is not innate but is a skill that must be developed through practice, and that this skill may be at risk of atrophying in a media environment that consistently rewards rapid rather than reflective engagement.
E. Social media platforms have profoundly altered the character of public information and discourse. The algorithmic curation of content — in which platforms surface material most likely to generate engagement, typically material that is emotionally provocative, surprising, or confirming of existing beliefs — has been associated with the spread of misinformation, the formation of echo chambers in which individuals encounter primarily views that reinforce their own, and increasing polarisation of opinion on political and social issues. Researchers have debated the magnitude of these effects, and some argue that the evidence for dramatic social harms from social media is weaker than the most alarmed accounts suggest, but few dispute that the information environment created by social media differs significantly from that of previous media technologies.
F. Individual and collective responses to the challenges of the digital information environment are still being worked out. At the individual level, strategies that have been found to improve wellbeing include deliberate periods of digital disconnection, the establishment of device-free zones and times, and the cultivation of analogue activities that reward sustained attention — reading physical books, practising music, engaging in extended face-to-face conversation. At the level of policy and platform design, there is growing pressure on technology companies to modify algorithmic systems that amplify outrage and division, to provide users with greater transparency and control over the content they see, and to design products that are less engineered for maximum engagement and more oriented toward user wellbeing.
