Traditional Mori Medicines
How indigenous New Zealand healing practices are being examined through the lens of modern science
A The Mori people of New Zealand developed a comprehensive system of medicinal knowledge over the centuries following their settlement of Aotearoa, drawing on the rich plant biodiversity of a group of islands that had evolved in isolation for millions of years. This knowledge -- known as rongo Mori -- encompasses not only the use of specific plant species to treat physical ailments but a broader understanding of health as the expression of balance between the individual, the community, and the natural world. For Mori healers, illness was rarely understood as simply a physical condition; spiritual and relational dimensions were considered equally important dimensions of wellbeing and recovery.
B European colonisation brought significant disruption to traditional Mori healing practices. The introduction of Western medicine, the suppression of indigenous cultural practices through much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the economic and social marginalisation of Mori communities all contributed to the erosion of traditional knowledge transmission. By the mid-twentieth century, many practitioners of rongo were elderly, the chain of intergenerational learning had been significantly weakened, and some plant knowledge had already been lost. The revitalisation of Mori culture from the 1970s onwards brought renewed attention to rongo as an element of cultural heritage worth preserving.
C Scientific investigation of the medicinal properties of plants used in rongo has produced encouraging results. Several species used by Mori healers to treat skin infections, respiratory conditions, and inflammatory disorders have been found to contain compounds with measurable antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory testing. Mnuka -- Leptospermum scoparium -- has attracted the most international attention, with its honey having been shown to inhibit the growth of a range of bacterial species, including antibiotic-resistant strains, and to promote wound healing through mechanisms that are still being fully characterised. Research on kawakawa, kmarahou, and harakeke has identified bioactive compounds whose therapeutic potential is only beginning to be explored.
D The relationship between scientific validation and indigenous knowledge is, however, complex and sometimes contested. Critics of the 'bioprospecting' approach -- in which indigenous plants are studied primarily as potential sources of commercially valuable compounds -- argue that this model extracts value from Mori knowledge without meaningfully acknowledging or compensating the communities who developed and preserved it. The Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document, contains provisions that Mori interpret as guaranteeing protection of their taonga -- treasured possessions -- including traditional knowledge. Legal and ethical frameworks for governing research on Mori medicinal plants remain an active area of negotiation between the New Zealand government, Mori communities, and the scientific and pharmaceutical communities.
E Parallel to scientific research, efforts are under way to document and revitalise the living practice of rongo. Practitioners -- tohunga -- are working with younger apprentices to ensure that the holistic understanding of healing that underlies rongo is transmitted alongside the specific plant knowledge. Community-based rongo clinics have been established in several parts of New Zealand, providing services that many Mori people find more culturally appropriate than conventional healthcare, particularly for conditions that have psychological, social, or spiritual dimensions. These clinics function within the New Zealand public health system and receive government funding, reflecting official recognition of rongo as a legitimate health practice.
F The broader significance of rongo extends beyond New Zealand. Indigenous medicinal systems around the world -- from Ayurveda in South Asia to traditional Chinese medicine to the plant knowledge of Amazonian peoples -- face similar challenges: the erosion of traditional practice, the interest of pharmaceutical researchers, and the tension between external validation and internal cultural authority. The rongo experience suggests that meaningful revitalisation requires not only scientific investigation but sustained community engagement, secure intellectual property frameworks, and recognition of indigenous health systems as knowledge traditions with their own integrity, rather than simply reservoirs of compounds waiting to be extracted and tested.
G New Zealand's approach to rongo has been described by international observers as among the most carefully negotiated in the world, though significant tensions remain. The challenge of balancing scientific rigour with cultural sensitivity, commercial interest with community rights, and modern health systems with traditional healing philosophies is unlikely to be fully resolved. What the process has demonstrated, however, is that indigenous knowledge systems need not be treated as remnants of the pre-scientific past. Approached with appropriate respect and reciprocity, they may have much to contribute to the future of medicine.
