The Development of the Silk Industry
How the world's most prized fabric shaped trade, technology, and geopolitics across three millennia
A. Silk is one of the oldest and most globally significant commodities in human history. Produced from the cocoons of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, it has been spun and woven in China for at least five thousand years, and its exceptional properties — a combination of lustre, strength, lightness, and the ability to take dye with extraordinary vividity — gave it a commercial and cultural value that no other natural fibre has matched. The Silk Road — the network of land and sea trade routes that connected China to Central Asia, the Middle East, and ultimately Europe — takes its name from silk, the commodity that more than any other drove its development and defined its cultural significance.
B. The origins of silk production — sericulture — are embedded in Chinese mythology. The most widely told account attributes the discovery of silk to the empress Leizu, wife of the Yellow Emperor, who according to legend accidentally dropped a silkworm cocoon into her hot tea and found that it unravelled into a continuous thread of extraordinary fineness and strength. Whatever its actual origins, sericulture was highly developed in China by the Shang dynasty (around 1600–1046 BCE), and silk textiles of great sophistication — including complex woven patterns that required skilled loom operators — have been recovered from burial sites of this period.
C. The Chinese state carefully guarded the secret of silk production for centuries, and the penalties for revealing the techniques or smuggling silkworms or mulberry seeds — the food plant of the silkworm — out of the country were reportedly severe. Despite these precautions, sericulture spread westward gradually. The Byzantine Empire reportedly obtained silkworm eggs and mulberry seeds through the agency of Nestorian monks who carried them concealed in hollow walking staves from Central Asia to Constantinople in the mid-sixth century CE, ending the Chinese monopoly on silk production. By the tenth century, sericulture was established across Persia, the Byzantine Empire, and parts of North Africa.
D. The industrial production of silk in Europe developed most intensively in northern Italy, particularly in the cities of Lucca, Florence, and Venice, from the thirteenth century onwards. Italian silk weavers developed new loom technologies — including the drawloom, which allowed weavers to create complex figured patterns — and refined dyeing techniques that produced the vibrant colours for which Italian silks became famous across Europe and the wider world. The silk trade was enormously profitable and provided the economic basis for the growth of the Italian banking system and for the patronage of art and architecture that defined the Italian Renaissance.
E. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw attempts to establish silk production in other European countries and in the colonial territories of the Americas. James I of England supported an ambitious scheme to establish mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing throughout Britain, planting mulberry trees in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and distributing silkworm eggs to landowners across the country. The scheme failed because the trees planted were of the wrong species — black mulberry rather than the white mulberry on which Bombyx mori feeds — and the cold British climate was unsuitable for the temperature-sensitive silkworm. Similar attempts were made in colonial Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia, with equally limited success.
F. The industrialisation of silk weaving in the nineteenth century, driven by the mechanical Jacquard loom patented in 1804, transformed the economics of the industry. The Jacquard loom, which used punched cards to control the lifting of individual warp threads, allowed complex patterns to be woven mechanically that had previously required highly skilled manual operators. Its adoption eliminated many skilled weaving jobs and generated intense conflict in the silk weaving cities of France — particularly Lyon, where the weavers known as the canuts staged a series of violent uprisings in the 1830s against the mechanisation of their trade. The use of punched cards to encode complex weaving instructions was later cited by Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace as an inspiration for the concept of programmable computation.
