The Popa langur's survival is attributed partly to the religious protection historically afforded to the trees of Mount Popa, which local tradition prohibits cutting. The golden lion tamarin of Brazil's Atlantic Forest illustrates both the potential and the limits of intensive conservation intervention. At its lowest point in the 1970s, the wild population had fallen to fewer than 200 individuals, pushed to the brink by the clearance of the Atlantic Forest for agriculture and urban development. Conservation programmes that generate tangible economic benefits for local communities through tourism revenue, employment, or payment for ecosystem services have consistently achieved better long-term outcomes than those that impose conservation as an external mandate without community engagement. The most successful programmes combine biodiversity protection with genuine improvements in human wellbeing. The global illegal wildlife trade remains a major threat to primate populations across Asia and Africa. Great apes, monkeys, and lorises are captured for the pet trade; primates are killed for bushmeat in Central and West African forests; and parts of several primate species are used in traditional medicine markets across Asia. Enforcement of legal protections for primates is inconsistent, and the penalties imposed on wildlife traffickers in many jurisdictions are insufficient to deter the trade given the profits available. International cooperation between enforcement agencies, combined with demand-reduction campaigns targeting consumer markets in East and Southeast Asia, represents the most promising approach to reducing the trade's impact on wild populations.
