Children's Comprehension How young children understand stories — and why the process is far more complex than it appears eading comprehension is conventionally treated as a skill that children acquire as they learn to decode written text. Yet research in developmental psychology has consistently shown that the cognitive foundations of comprehension are established years before children can read a single word, through the experience of being read to, listening to oral narrative, and engaging with the picture books that form the first exposure to narrative structure for most children in literate societies. By the age of three or four, most children who have been regularly exposed to stories can follow a narrative, anticipate outcomes, and detect violations of story logic — capacities that reflect sophisticated underlying cognitive competencies. The comprehension of narrative requires the construction and maintenance of a mental model of the story world — what cognitive scientists call a situation model. As a story unfolds, the listener or reader must track the identities, locations, goals, and emotional states of characters; maintain an understanding of the causal relationships between events; and update all of these continuously as new information arrives. This process of building and revising a mental model places significant demands on working memory and requires the rapid integration of incoming narrative information with existing knowledge about the world and about how stories conventionally work. Young children's comprehension of narrative is facilitated by the schematic knowledge — broadly, an understanding of what typically happens in particular situations — that they have accumulated through experience. Children who understand that doctors examine patients, that dogs chase cats, or that villains in stories typically receive their just punishment can use this knowledge to fill gaps in explicit narrative content, to anticipate what comes next, and to detect when a story deviates from expected patterns. Research has found that comprehension of stories set in familiar cultural contexts is consistently better than comprehension of otherwise similar stories set in unfamiliar contexts, confirming the importance of prior knowledge as a scaffold for meaning construction. Inference-making is central to narrative comprehension at every level of development. Skilled comprehension requires not merely encoding the literal content of a text but drawing logical conclusions that are implied but not stated. When a story says that a character opened the refrigerator and looked disappointed, skilled readers infer that
the character was hungry and that the refrigerator was empty — neither of which is explicitly stated. Young children vary considerably in their spontaneous inference- making during story comprehension, and this variation is a strong predictor of subsequent reading comprehension skill even when differences in decoding ability are controlled for. Emotional comprehension — understanding the feelings of story characters and the emotional consequences of story events — develops in parallel with narrative comprehension but follows its own developmental trajectory. Toddlers show responses indicating that they understand emotional content in simple stories; by school age, children can attribute complex emotional states including embarrassment, jealousy, and mixed emotions to story characters. The ability to reason about characters' mental states — including false beliefs, misunderstandings, and unspoken intentions — is known as theory of mind and is closely related to both social development and narrative comprehension. Children who perform well on theory of mind tasks tend to show better narrative comprehension, and vice versa. The development of comprehension monitoring — the ability to detect when one's understanding has broken down and to take action to repair it — is a metacognitive skill that emerges gradually across the primary school years. Young children tend to process text in a relatively passive mode, accepting inconsistencies without necessarily noticing them or attempting to resolve them. As comprehension develops, readers become more active and strategic, noticing difficulties, asking questions, and applying repair strategies such as rereading or seeking clarification. Poor comprehenders at all ages tend to be less active monitors of their own understanding than skilled comprehenders, and explicit instruction in comprehension monitoring strategies has been shown to improve comprehension outcomes in children who struggle.
